Many people are surprised to learn that the name “Pho Hoa” doesn’t come from the owner or any family member. It’s actually the name of a man who sold pho from a street cart more than 50 years ago. According to the current owner, Mrs. Nguyen Thi Xiem, the man – Mr. Hoa – would push his cart nearly 20 kilometers every day from the Xom Moi market (Go Vap district) to Pasteur Street to sell his pho. By chance, he ended up passing down his pho business and cooking experience to Mrs. Xiem’s family.
Mrs. Xiem also shared that 60 years ago, Pasteur Street was known as “Pho Street” because it was lined with dozens of pho vendors. Even though there weren’t many bustling restaurants back then, the Pho Hoa cart, which Mrs. Xiem and her mother and uncle would push out around 4 PM, was always packed with customers. They would work hard to serve delicious bowls of pho to locals until midnight.
Today, Pho Hoa Pasteur is a household name in the busy city center of Ho Chi Minh City. And since receiving the Bib Gourmand title from Michelin, the restaurant has become even more famous, attracting tourists on their culinary journey to discover Vietnamese food.
